New Gaming Division Leader Appointed in Macau

The Macau Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) has named Paulo Jorge Moreira Castelo Basaloco as the leader of the Gaming Inspection Division.

Basaloco formally assumed his post on December 7th, with the organization’s director, Adriano Marques Ho, present at the inauguration ceremony.

During the ceremony, Ho stated that the Gaming Inspection Division is a “pivotal department” and expressed his hope that Basaloco would perform his responsibilities with “devotion.” Ho also expressed his wish for Basaloco to be “effective” in enforcing the regulations outlined in Macau’s new gaming law and to cultivate a united and collaborative team within the office.

Basaloco initially joined the DICJ in 1988, initially working in the Gaming Contract Inspection Division. He possesses a degree in Physical Education and Kinesiology from the Macau Polytechnic Institute.

New Regulations

In June of this year, Macau’s Legislative Assembly approved significant changes to Macau’s regulatory framework for the gaming industry, the first significant alterations since the liberalization of the industry in 2002.

The bill, which has been under consideration since last year, reformed the licensing and tax rules for Macau’s Special Administrative Region.

Although the quantity of gambling licenses stayed constant at six, the revised legislation introduced substantial tax hikes and granted the Macau Chief Executive greater authority to adjust concession tax rates with more flexibility.

In November, the Macau government officially granted all six gaming licenses, with one operator – Genting – failing to acquire one.
