Casino Cosmopol Sundsvall to Close Permanently

The Swedish gaming firm Svenska Spel has declared that its Casino Cosmopol land-based gambling establishment in Sundsvall will permanently shut its doors due to dwindling profits and a drop in customer turnout.

Svenska Spel inaugurated Casino Cosmopol Sundsvall in 2001, touting it as Sweden’s first international casino. However, in recent times, the operator has witnessed a downward trend in demand for the facility.

As per Svenska Spel, the number of patrons frequenting the casino has been on a downward trajectory over the past ten years, adversely affecting the venue’s financial standing.

The operator also highlighted that the migration of gamblers from physical gambling to online gambling has also had a detrimental impact on the casino.

The decision takes effect immediately and will impact all 68 individuals employed at the establishment.

The operator stated that it will extend invitations to former Sundsvall employees to apply for other positions within its network.

Svenska Spel’s chief executive, Patrick Hofbauer, has delivered some unfortunate news to their skilled workforce. “We must adjust to the current market conditions,” he stated.

“The Sundsvall casino is no longer profitable due to a decline in patrons. It is simply not a sound business decision to keep it operational.”

Svenska Spel has assured the public that the closure of the Sundsvall casino will not impact their gambling establishments in Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö, despite the fact that all locations are currently shut down due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The casinos were closed on March 29th, resulting in the layoff of 800 out of 900 employees. The company has not yet announced a reopening date.

Svenska Spel has initiated a program to assist laid-off employees in acquiring new skills to pursue careers in the healthcare sector.
